People who are homeless have unique problems not adequately addressed by traditional providers of legal services.
People who are homeless generally have additional issues, such as:
- General mistrust for the system
- Difficulty accessing mainstream services
- Transient, unstable living situations
- Mental health and substance abuse issues
- Lack of understanding of legal rights
- Chief concern is survival
Response:
Legal services provided by the Homeless Justice Project differ from traditional legal services in the following ways:
- Legal services are brought to the individual
- A holistic approach addresses an individual’s legal needs as well as any non-legal needs that may be impeding the ability to end their homelessness.
Success at Crisis Ministries:
- In Disability claims the national approval average is approximately 60%; the Homeless Justice Project’s approval average is 90%.
- Annually, the Homeless Justice Project provides legal services to over 500 guests.
