Homeless Health Clinic

Issue:

  • Homeless people are three to six times more likely to become ill than those who are housed.
  • Poor health is both a cause and a result of being homeless.
  • Receiving adequate health care is even more of a problem; especially for those with chronic conditions.
  • Most lack health insurance and are ineligible for Medicaid.
  • As a result, homeless individuals are more likely to use the ER as their primary source of health care – an ineffective, expensive way to provide health care.

Response:

  • The Homeless Health Clinic provides services in one location, in a continuum of care, reducing barriers to adequate health care.
  • Every guest receives a complete medical screening.
  • Based on results from medical screenings, and in consultation with the primary on site volunteer physicians, referrals are made to Crisis Ministries’ growing number of community partners and referral networks.

Success at Crisis Ministries:

  • In 2009, over 1,700 visits were conducted in the clinic.
  • In 2009, we decreased ER visits to local hospitals by 33%.
